The genesis of wine tradition has arrived in the High Country of North Carolina. Banner Elk Winery is the first commercial winery built in Avery and Watauga counties. Their wines have received recognition with Double Gold and Bronze Medals in the 2006 and 2007 NC State Fairs.

The winery produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, High Country Rose, Banner Elk Red, Banner Elk White, Vino Francesco, Blueberry wine from estate grown blueberries, and ice wines when conditions permit. Their wines feature locally grown grapes and reflect the unique characteristics of fruit grown in the Appalachian Mountains.

Banner Elk’s Vintner, Dr. Richard Wolfe, provides guidance to local farmers planting vineyards which grow the French-American and American hybrid grapes. These varieties, originally grown in the French Alps, are hearty enough to survive the harsh winters of the High Country. Also located on the property is Blueberry Villa, the estate Bed and Breakfast Inn. With a complimentary wine tasting and Winery tour, this High Country rural setting is unique and perfect for a romantic getaway.
