Smith McDowell House Museum Families, students, preservationists, and history lovers will enjoy the Smith McDowell House Museum. Tour the rooms which are decorated and carefully furnished to match the six decades from 1840-1900, to appreciate this fascinating era. People like James Smith, a remarkable entrepreneur, and Major William McDowell, a Civil War leader, will come alive. Visitors at Christmas and Easter will enjoy seasonal celebrations.

Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds, Richard Sharp Smith shaped the building to fit the needs of one of its owners, and in the 1970s preservationists saved the structure from demolition. The Civil War Memorial adjacent to the Museum commemorates Confederate and Union soldiers from the region who died for their different causes.

Awarded a Save America’s Treasures preservation and restoration grant, this National Historic Landmark will be one of the highpoints of your visit to Asheville.

Tip: Follow signs for entry from porch (clearly marked).
